When you use a clipboard manager, you're trusting it with everything you copy. That includes passwords from your password manager, sensitive documents, private conversations, and financial information. At Awesome Copy, we take this responsibility seriously.
We've built multiple layers of security features that let you decide exactly how your clipboard data is handled. Whether you want to completely exclude certain apps, mask sensitive content, or automatically clear your history, Awesome Copy gives you the control you need.
Smart Password Manager Detection
One of the most common concerns with clipboard managers is how they handle passwords. When you copy a password from 1Password, Bitwarden, Apple Passwords, or other password managers, you don't want it sitting in your clipboard history forever.
Awesome Copy automatically detects when you copy from password managers using the industry-standard concealed content marker (org.nspasteboard.ConcealedType). This is the same standard that major password managers use to signal that content is sensitive.
When we detect concealed content, you have three options:
Skip
Completely ignore the copy. It's never recorded in your history.
Mask
Record the item but display it as bullets (••••••••) so you know it exists without revealing content.
Show
Record and display normally, like any other clipboard item.
Where to find this setting
Settings > Privacy Options - Choose how to handle concealed content from password managers.
Ignore Specific Apps
Sometimes you want to completely exclude certain apps from clipboard recording. Maybe it's a banking app, a secure messaging platform, or any application where you handle sensitive data regularly.
The Ignore Apps feature lets you build a list of apps that Awesome Copy will never record from. When you copy something while one of these apps is active, it simply won't appear in your clipboard history.
How we detect the source app
When something is copied, Awesome Copy identifies which app performed the copy by checking the frontmost application. We capture:
- The app's unique bundle identifier (e.g., com.1password.1password)
- The app's display name
- The app's icon for easy recognition
Auto-Clear Your History
For users who want extra peace of mind, Awesome Copy offers automatic history clearing tied to system events. You can enable any combination of these options:
Clear on Quit
When you close Awesome Copy, your entire clipboard history is automatically cleared. This is perfect if you want a fresh start every time you use the app.
Clear on Screen Lock
When your Mac locks (like when you press Control + Command + Q or close your laptop), your history is cleared. This protects your data if someone else accesses your Mac while you're away. Pinned items are preserved so you don't lose important clips.
Clear on Sleep
Similar to screen lock, this clears your history when your Mac goes to sleep. Again, pinned items are preserved.
Tip: Pin your frequently-used clips (like email signatures or code snippets) so they survive auto-clear events. Pinned items are never automatically deleted.
History Time Limits
Instead of letting clipboard items accumulate forever, you can set a time limit for how long items are kept. Awesome Copy offers these options:
- 1 Hour - For maximum privacy, only keep recent items
- 1 Day - A fresh start each day
- 1 Week - The default, balanced option
- 1 Month - For users who need longer history
- 1 Year - Maximum history retention
Items older than your selected time limit are automatically deleted during regular cleanup operations. This happens seamlessly in the background.
Your Data Stays on Your Devices
Unlike some clipboard managers that sync through third-party servers, Awesome Copy uses iCloud exclusively for syncing. Your clipboard data travels directly between your devices using Apple's encrypted infrastructure. We never see, store, or have access to your clipboard content.
This means:
- Your data is encrypted end-to-end
- Only your devices can access your clipboard history
- No third-party servers ever touch your data
- You're protected by Apple's security standards
Take Control of Your Clipboard
Security isn't one-size-fits-all. That's why we've built these features to be flexible and customizable. Whether you want to ignore all password manager copies, clear your history every time your Mac sleeps, or just set a reasonable time limit, Awesome Copy gives you the tools to protect your data the way you want.
All these settings are available in the Awesome Copy preferences. Take a few minutes to configure them to match your security needs, and copy with confidence knowing your sensitive data is protected.
